Do you hate your alarm? Whether it’s a loud and annoying sound to make sure you get up or your favorite song (but later becomes the song to terrorize your life), you want that perfect way to wake up every morning. Japanese fashion giant Uniqlo has developed the new “Wake Up” social app for both iOS and Android. Meant to make waking up in the morning as enjoyable as possible, the app offers alarm music that is automatically created with a dependence on the current time, weather and day of the week. After watching the video above which helps to show you exactly what the alarm experience is like, I took this as an opportunity to experiment with the app. After two successful mornings of waking up to the alarm I’ve concluded the following: the alarm will actually wake you up (and I’m a heavy sleeper), the music which changes everyday is actually very pleasant and not annoying, and the women who speaks to you form the app knows her shit pretty well. The app is currently available free of charge so check out the app!

Jacob Sutton is a London-based photographer, and short filmmaker.  And I think he’s pretty awesome.  These beauties are from an underwater shoot.  They don’t need a caption.

While studying Sonkeigo and Kanji, my playlist stumbled upon Japanese singer ayaka (絢香 ). In 2009, it was announced that she was diagnosed with Graves’ Disease and would be taking a hiatus at the conclusion of that year. This is a clip from her last performance before her hiatus, singing “みんな空の下” [Under Everyone’s Sky]. A very uplifting, encouraging song.

The people of Japan (and arguably Asia) take responsibility on themselves in individualistic ways to uphold collectivist ideals instilled from a long history culturally. I don’t know if I can explain it properly, but the composition and sustaining existence of pop music is definitely derived from the behavioral/cognitive/mindset of the nation (+ cultural style).

Hmm a very ethnomusicology related post. Hmm.. are my recommendations for UCLA research still valid?  T^T

Throwback from last year.

One of the more enjoyable interviews to revisit for entertainment.

// Mr. Newsman//

After hearing the profound words of Dr. Angela Davis today, I was humbled, inspired, and reminded of what type of outlook to uphold. I came home to read the news and to see the things highlighted in our media… the social construction and ‘reporting’ is really upsetting in the logical, ethical, and emotional sense.

Violence certainly does not personify as any gender, race, or class; it’s universal. I think Dr. Reese mentioned something along the lines that people won’t take action if you don’t make them care - this is certainly exemplified in media reports and thus becomes relative to the accepted & exempted ‘norms’ in society.

I know that sensationalism, diction, point of view, and audience appeal all guide in how “news” is reported… but if media is such a powerful tool and attention brings profit, why can’t we be the capitalists that have a functionable corporate responsibility of ethics??

I was reading up on today’s Zimmerman media reports and I stumbled upon media reports of two USC students shot to death this morning. Obviously there is still lack of information, so media reports are all very general…. but this report was probably the most appalling:

  • Naturally, USC would stay quiet from a legal & business POV (and there isn’t anything wrong with that, USC as an entity is irrelevant to the actual crime). So why are there worries about it hurting USC’s rep. USC is a very recognized school with high demand of enrollment. Crime in that area has been prevalent for YEARS. To get public opinion on that is not news, is not important, and it doesn’t arise to any solution to the actual content of this incidence.
  •  60,000 BMW?! Two students are dead, there are no suspect leads, but that’s all you can mention as an anchorwoman? Again, not news, not important, and doesn’t arise to any solution

“We want to move on to the solution of not thinking about the problem.”

// Get it right.//

id est(id EST) Literally, “that is.” Usually abbreviated ‘i.e.’ and often confused with ‘e.g.’ Example: “She won the race, i.e., she crossed the finish line first.” The decision whether to use ‘i.e.,’ or ‘e.g.’ should be based on whether “that is” or “for example” is what is wanted in the sentence.

If prayer is requested, I’ll empathize with the God conceived by man for the sake of another man.

But really,

I don’t believe in the God conceived by man. I believe in all the rights and wrong of the man conceived by another man.
